Welcomes you to The Youth Conference: "The Community and I"
Message from the President of LAWA, Mrs. Bounheng Inversin.
Dear friends, colleagues and community leaders:
SUBJECT: Invitation to the Youth Conference, on Saturday 8/13/05.
Looking back 30 years ago, our community has come a long way. Thinking back, we acknowledge that our parents have accomplished beyond our imagination in their new life in America, surviving the cultural shock, holding numerous jobs in order to make ends meet and moving places to ensure affordable housing. Yet the majority of them, through unsurpassed efforts and sacrifices, have managed to provide a good education for their children. They strongly believed that education is the best means of overcoming
hardship such the faced.
In addition to striving tirelessly to better their family, our parents came together to support their community as well. In despite of limited skills needed to master their new ways of life and of limited command of the English language, they overcame obstacles. In the process, a number of clubs and associations were established and then disappeared. We frequently feel that our community hasn't advanced as fast and as far as it should have, in comparison with other communities with a similar past.
Our parents have proudly done their part. Now is the time to do ours.
Many of us were born here; many others grew up here. The American way of life is therefore no stranger to us. We no longer have the same urgent burdens that our parents had. On the contrary, we're far much better equipped to deal with life than they. Now the question is, how can I fulfill my parents' wishes and continue what they started? What can I do to improve myself and how can I contribute to better my community, to move it forward where it should be?
You're cordially invited to join our Youth Conference "The Community and I" to meet and network with our fellow community members and guest speakers. Experienced community leaders and professionals will present a variety of topics and issues.
We, the Lao American Women Association, thank you and look forward to seeing you all.
