Empowerment
Educational Scholarship Fund
The Educational Scholarship Fund was established in 2003. LAWA inaugural scholarship of $1,000 was awarded on Mother's Day
Banquet in May 2004. Since then, we have awarded 6 college scholarships.
In 2008, we have expanded the program to include vocational training
scholarship to women. Beginning in 2009, the women scholarship is
extended to include funding to obtain GED as well.
Lao School and Youth Activities
The Lao community in the nation's capital felt a need to preserve the
Lao language and culture. We started to offer the learning classes
since LAWA was established. Both Lao language and culture dance
class are opened to all Lao American and all nationals who have interest
and want to learn Lao culture and language.
Youth Conference 2004
Building Leadership and Developing Communities was held on August 6-8 in Seattle, WA.
Three youth (two college and one high school students) and two Board members from LAWA attended this conference.
The issues presented and discussed at the conference were about college preparation, public speaking, resume writing, job and
interview readiness, and other introductories for college and job market. The conference was organized and hosted by the Lao
Student Association of the University of Washington and the Lao Family and Youth Service in partnership with the Seattle Community.
Capacity Building
In 2004 LAWA received the Values, Empowerment, Resources, and Betterment (VERB) Grant. Although LAWA is the recipient,
the funds meant for the benefit of the whole community.
